Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST), formerly named Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, was established in 1960 and enjoys the reputation as "the cradle of meteorological talents in China".

The School of Mathematics and Statistics (SMS) in NUIST, is eligible to offer Master's and PhD programs in Mathematics, master's program in Statistics, and Professional Master's program in Applied Statistics, as well as postdoctoral positions of Mathematics. Mathematics is ranked in the top 1% globally by ESI and has been designated as a Key Discipline by both the China Meteorological Administration and Jiangsu Province, as well as a Priority Discipline in Jiangsu Universities.
The School offers three undergraduate majors including Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (MAM), Information and Computing Science (ICS), and Applied Statistics (AS), which are all key majors of Jiangsu Province, China. ICS and AS were selected as the First-class undergraduate major by the MOE. The School also hosts two major provincial initiatives: the Jiangsu Province Mathematics Talented Students Cultivation Program 2.0 Base and the ""Information and Computational Science + Artificial Intelligence"" Dual-Degree Training Program.

Research Areas and Features:
· We focus on the problem-driven theoretical research, and several strong research teams have been formed in the fields of fluid dynamics, scientific calculation, statistical inference, time series, algebra and number theory, etc.
· We emphasize on the intersection and integration with the atmospheric sciences, develop mathematical technology to solve key problems in interdisciplinary research, and carry out extensive and in-depth research on the application of multiple linear models to typhoon diagnosis, the application of control theory to data assimilation, earth system model and other atmospheric mathematics, etc.
Platform: The National Center for Applied Mathematics (jointly), the Jiangsu Center for Applied Mathematics, Jiangsu Research Base for Statistics, Jiangsu Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation, Jiangsu Foreign Experts Studio and 5 Jiangsu Enterprise graduate workstations, which can provide excellent social resource for enhancing the students’ innovation and enterprise ability.
International and Industrial Collaboration: On average, about 30 mathematicians or business experts from around the world visit the School each year for 2 to 4 weeks, conducting joint research with local mathematicians and statisticians, holding seminars, and making themselves available for consultation with students working in their area. Through teaching partnership and active cooperative research projects, the School has close ties with the industry such as Huawei and Neusoft.
Fund: In the past five years, the research teams of the School has undertaken nearly 100 national-level projects and programs such as key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, key programs of the National Social Science Fund of China, and key research and development projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Publications: More than 300 SCI papers have been published in high-quality T1 and T2 journals such as Science China Journals, AMS Journals, SIAM Journals, IEEE Journals, Comm Math Phys, J Funct Anal, J Math Pures Appl, Automatica, Int Math Res Not, Nat Sci Rev, ACM Trans Graph, J Comput Phys, J Algebra, J Differential Equations, J Climate, etc, and more than 30 monographs and textbooks, in the past five years.
Academic Exchange: The School promotes the coordinated development of basic and applied research, organizing various seminars, forums, workshops, and academic talks, and steadily enhancing its academic reputation.
Aims: Advancing mathematical and statistical knowledge through novel and insightful research. Training experts in not only mathematics but also other academic, industrial, and applied fields.
International Joint Training Program: International cooperation with University of Reading, Korea University, York University, etc., carrying out joint enrollment and training of undergraduate, master and PhD students, as well as regular academic exchanges.
Employment and Further Education: In recent years, the total employment rate of graduates has exceeded 98%, among which the high-quality employment rate has exceeded 95%. Graduates are mainly engaged in the field of scientific research, teaching, technological development, and production application in government offices, state-owned enterprises, scientific research institutions, education, IT industry, meteorology, communications, finance and other departments. At the same time, a large number of graduates have been admitted to prestigious universities and research institutes at home and abroad such as Imperial College London, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Tongji University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2024 and 2025, the further study rate of undergraduate graduates exceeded 47.7%.
